If you are actually running the business from your home are any type of permits required from the city or state? What is the best way to advertise your business when it is a new start up?

The first question - what permits are required by your city and state - depend greatly on the city or state (or even county) that you live in. It seems like every state (and city) has different rules for what you need to do to become an “official” business. But, there are some basics that are fairly common for any new small business (and I can only speak for US-based businesses):
